Big Kid Boogeymen

Image
Ebola.  School shootings.  ISIS.  Cancer.  Do any of those things strike fear in your heart?  These are what I refer to as the big-kid boogeymen.  This is a scary world we live in.  Right now, as I type, my husband is watching the news and I am hearing about a woman who tried to strangle another woman with a phone cord and steal her 10-week old baby.  The world is full of crazies.  Some of the horrific images I have seen on Facebook lately have literally made me physically ill, to the point where I have to put my phone down and walk away in tears, crying to God, "Why?  Why God??" I wish God would explain it to me now...but He whispers to my soul, "In time.  But for now, peace.  Be still."  Is the world worse now than ever before?  I doubt it.  There are so many stories of war and famine and annihilation in the Bible.  Murder and violence are certainly nothing new....

Feeling the Rainbow

Image
Have you ever seen a gorgeous rainbow in the sky...that was only one color?  A beautiful, calm shade of violet.  One color.  Always the same. Of course you haven't!  Rainbows are meant to have all eight colors of the spectrum...Roy G. Biv.  Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.  (My momma taught me that.)  And I've discovered that our emotions are a lot like rainbows - meant to be experienced with the entire spectrum in tact.  Happy, sad, angry, surprised, silly, content, frustrated, and a long list of others.  I started taking antidepressants many years ago to help me through a 'rough time'.  Not only did taking medication not help...I largely attribute the medication with making things even worse.  And what typically happens when a dose of medication isn't helping the way 'they' think it should?  They change medications or increase the dose.  Maybe both, as was my case. I settled in to a 'comfortab...

Trust Issues?

Faith and trust go hand in hand.  Would you agree?  In my mind they are closer than cousins...perhaps more like Siamese twins.  It's difficult for me to imagine having one without the other...but I'm not here to debate the fact, or to convince you one way or another.  It's just my humble opinion.  Take it or leave it.  But have you ever thought about the amount of faith and trust it takes to get through a day??  Walk through a typical day with me:  I have faith that my alarm clock will go off.  Which means 1) I trust that the electrician properly wired my home to provide power to charge my phone, and 2) I trust that the folks in that factory in some distant land put all the pieces together properly when my phone and charger were assembled.  3) I trust the person who wrote the program that causes my phone to keep up with time accurately... Getting in the car and driving my child to school requires monumental faith!  I h...

2 GOOD 2 B TRUE

Image
Have you ever had that feeling that something is too good to be true?  And what's the old adage?  "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."  Didn't everyone's mother tell them this?  There's always a catch, right?  Usually, I refer to that as the 'fine print'.  Or that really annoying, super-fast voice that comes on after the too-good-to-be-true offer was just made, to immediately disqualify every one who's breathing.  But no purchase necessary.  That's nice to know.  So often we demand proof.  We have to see it to believe it.  Ah yes, you've no doubt heard this one too, "Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see."  Is it any wonder we are a pessimistic society, lacking in trust?  I used to ask my children if their homework was done.  Of course it's done.  "Show me."  If it was truly done, they would proudly produce their papers, chin out, shoulders back, as if to say, "I tol...
