Finding My Rhythm

I recently read a book that my daughter shared with me — Untamed by Glennon Doyle.
About halfway through, something the author said stuck with me: she talked about “finding your rhythm.”
That phrase gave me pause. I read it again… and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it.
What is my rhythm?
What does that even mean to me?
Physiologically, rhythm is the regular recurrence of an action or function — like your heartbeat.
It’s the cadence of your life.
The beat of the drum you march to.
Since we sold the farm and I’m no longer working outside the home, my rhythm has slowed tremendously. I sleep until I feel rested. I (mostly) follow the cues of my own internal clock. I recognize how fortunate I am to be in a season where this is possible. Many women are not.
I didn’t always live this way. For years, my rhythm was determined by the constant needs and wants of seven children. It was exhausting.
But I survived.
And, by the grace of God, so did they.
Now, I’m learning to let my rhythm adjust to a new chapter of life. But I believe this is true in every season: we have more control over the rhythm of our lives than we often admit.
There’s no prize for being constantly overwhelmed.
No gold medal for answering “How are you?” with “Swamped!”
Even in busy seasons — especially in those seasons — we must remember that rest is holy.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
As wives, mothers, grandmothers, and sisters in Christ, we’re called to live wisely and with intention.
“Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity…” — Ephesians 5:15–16
One way we do this is by paying attention to how we spend our time and energy.
Our calendars and our bank statements tell the truth about our priorities.
They reveal the rhythm we’re living by.
And here’s the thing: you get to choose your pace.
You don’t have to live in constant frenzy.
You don’t have to match the world’s noise.
We can (and should) take responsibility for creating a rhythm that we want, not just letting it happen. It's like the 'slow clap' that you hear at sporting events. The crowd starts off with a slow, steady clap.........clap........clap.......clap......clap.....clap....clap...clap..clap - and the claps come faster and faster until it's a wild frenzy of applause.
That's what happens in our lives. But the good news is that we can make it stop.
Life can feel like that sometimes — one thing piling on top of another until you’re overwhelmed.
But you can stop the chaos. You can slow the clapping.
You can take a deep breath, step back, and ask:
What kind of rhythm do I want?
If you’re in a season of hustle, that’s okay.
Just make sure the hustle has purpose — not pressure.
If you’re craving peace, don’t be afraid to slow it all down.
Live the life God is calling you to. With intention. With grace. In rhythm with Him.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:28–29
